What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles?

However, not all tiles are the same. A good example is porcelain and ceramic because people tend to use the two words interchangeably, but that's not correct. They each have different strength and absorption levels that affect how they behave in various installations.

Porcelain: Ideal floor tile for a heavily trafficked room

Porcelain's composition includes non-porous clay, sand, and glass, and it's fired at a higher temperature than ceramics, resulting in a heavier, denser tile. It also has a low water absorption rate making it suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

As beautiful as it is functional, this large format tile comes in countless colors and patterns. It's often the preferred choice for wood or stone looks and can also be made to look like fabric or leather. This can also be used on walls, and tub/shower surrounds.

All about ceramics

You'll see an almost unlimited number of designs, patterns, shapes, and sizes in a tile store, but each can be best used in specific installations. For example, the squares we've all seen on backsplashes, counters, and accent walls can also be used on the floor of moderately heavy indoor rooms.

Mosaics, often glass coated and highly decorative, are especially popular for bathroom floors, while ultra-durable terracotta bricks can be used indoors or out. Subway tiles should be used on indoor, low traffic floors like the bedroom.
